STUDY  (HAVE 1 PERSON READ THE VERSE. PLEASE BE SURE TO USE CORRECT BIBLE VERSION)

Mark 2:5 & 11-12 (NLT) Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”  And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God…

STATEMENT from OUR PASTOR

In his message Pastor Jerry talked about how we all have times when we need friends with faith that can carry us through difficulties and into success.

“Friends and Faith go together.” - Pastor Jerry

DISCUSSION

There are 2 ways that Faith is expressed in our friend groups:

  1. Prayer

Matthew 18:19-20 NLT  “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

Have some of the people in your group share a time when the prayer of faith from friends made a difference in their life.

2. Encouragement

Romans 1:12 NLT “When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.”

Share how you have received encouragement from a friend group that has helped you through a difficult time.

PRAYER TIME (please take around 15 minutes to pray as a group)

  • Pray for the needs of the people in your group.

  • Be creative in how you pray! Here are a few ideas:

    • Split guys and girls to pray in different rooms

    • Pair up with another couple or person and just pray for each other

    • Put a hot seat in the middle and have everyone pray for 1 person for a longer length of time

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. FAME: October 12-13.

    • We ask that all groups take this week off from meeting to allow every woman to come to FAME.

    • We encourage men to have a guys night while the girls go to FAME.

  2. ENCOUNTER: The next Encounter Night is OCTOBER 2nd at 7pm.

    • It would be awesome to bring your whole group to Tuesday Encounter in October!

    • It’s okay to bring group to Encounter instead of having your regular group meeting the first week of October.

SCRIPTURE & DISCUSSION QUESTION

Please have 1 person read each:

For our Modern Family series finale, each of our Pastors were asked the question, “What did you not get from your family that the Church gave you?”

1. Pastor Tobe’s main point was that the church is a safe place to get help & wisdom with personal addictions & practical help to get freedom.

James 5:16 (AMP)

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].

2. Pastor Nic’s main point was that your spouse comes before your kids and to make marriage a priority.

Ephesians 5:25 MSG

Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church

3. Pastor Carl’s main point was to make Church a priority because the church can partner with the family to bring vision and purpose to each individual’s life.

‭‭II Timothy‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭NKJV

“who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,”

4 .Pastor Gabe’s main point was, to be a model for your family, so they understand God is a good Father. Let God build your life and make Him the central focus of your home.

Psalm 127:1a; 3-4

1a Unless the Lord builds a house,

the work of the builders is wasted.

3 Children are a gift from the Lord;

they are a reward from him.

4 Children born to a young man

are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.

Romans 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Matthew 5:15-16 (TNIV) Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Psalm 100:5 (NKJV) For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

SCRIPTURE & DISCUSSION QUESTION

Please have 1 person read each:

Hebrews 11:7 (MSG)- By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved. His act of faith drew a sharp line between the evil of the unbelieving world and the rightness of the believing world. As a result, Noah became intimate with God.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (MSG)- Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.

Give each person a chance to share for 1 min:

Pastor Jerry encouraged us all to have successful families by:

  1. Teaching our kids to love God’s word

  2. Teaching our kids to love God’s house

Discuss practical ways that you will instill a love for the Bible and Church in your life and your family.

PRAYER TIME

SCRIPTURE & DISCUSSION QUESTION

Please have 1 person read each:

Joshua 24:14-15 (NIV) “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:23 (NLT) "All right then," Joshua said, "destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."

Give each person a chance to share for 1 min:

One of the questions Pastor Gabe asked everyone is how would you fill in the blank. I couldn’t live without ________.

Joshua is saying that each of us need to make a choice to serve God and serve him alone. He doesn’t want us to have anything that would distract us from now. There are two steps. The first is to remember everything that God has done. The second is to respond to God and choose him alone.

1. What is one thing that you remember God doing powerfully in your life?

2. Is there anything that distracts you from serving God and focusing your time and attention on him? What is it, and how could you change?

PRAYER TIME

God wants our whole heart. He wants us to give Him everything we have and to put Him in the first place. We need to take ourselves out and put him in. Pray over each other that we would put God in first place over our lives.

SCRIPTURE & DISCUSSION QUESTION

Please have 1 person read each:

Song of Solomon 5:16 “...this is my lover and my friend.”

Galatians 6:2 (NIV)  “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Proverbs 24:26 (NLT) “An honest answer is like a kiss of friendship.”

Proverbs 17:9 (NLT) “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.”

Give each person a chance to share for 1 min:

Dave and Ashley Willis shared that the heart of every marriage is strong friendship. They shared three principles that lead to that.

Principle 1: Friends carry each others burdens.

Principle 2: Friends should always tell each-other the truth.

Principle 3: Friends don’t give up on each other.

Share a time when your spouse was a true friend to you with one of these principles. Not married? How has a friend helped you carry a burden, been honest, or encouraged you to persevere?

PRAYER TIME

Pray for everyone’s marriage in your group to be stronger in friendship. For singles groups, pray for friendships to be strengthened in the same 3 areas.
