For our Modern Family series finale, each of our Pastors were asked the question, “What did you not get from your family that the Church gave you?”

1. Pastor Tobe’s main point was that the church is a safe place to get help & wisdom with personal addictions & practical help to get freedom.

James 5:16 (AMP)

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].

 

2. Pastor Nic’s main point was that your spouse comes before your kids and to make marriage a priority.

Ephesians 5:25 MSG

Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church

 

3. Pastor Carl’s main point was to make Church a priority because the church can partner with the family to bring vision and purpose to each individual’s life.

“who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,”

4 .Pastor Gabe’s main point was, to be a model for your family, so they understand God is a good Father. Let God build your life and make Him the central focus of your home.

Matthew 5:15-16 (TNIV) Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Hebrews 11:7 (MSG)- By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved. His act of faith drew a sharp line between the evil of the unbelieving world and the rightness of the believing world. As a result, Noah became intimate with God.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (MSG)- Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.

Pastor Jerry encouraged us all to have successful families by:

  1. Teaching our kids to love God’s word

  2. Teaching our kids to love God’s house

Discuss practical ways that you will instill a love for the Bible and Church in your life and your family.

Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:23 (NLT) "All right then," Joshua said, "destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."

 

 Give each person a chance to share for 1 min: 

One of the questions Pastor Gabe asked everyone is how would you fill in the blank. I couldn’t live without ________.

Joshua is saying that each of us need to make a choice to serve God and serve him alone. He doesn’t want us to have anything that would distract us from now. There are two steps. The first is to remember everything that God has done. The second is to respond to God and choose him alone.

1. What is one thing that you remember God doing powerfully in your life?

2. Is there anything that distracts you from serving God and focusing your time and attention on him? What is it, and how could you change?

PRAYER TIME

God wants our whole heart. He wants us to give Him everything we have and to put Him in the first place. We need to take ourselves out and put him in. Pray over each other that we would put God in first place over our lives.

Proverbs 17:9 (NLT) “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.”

 

 Give each person a chance to share for 1 min: 

Dave and Ashley Willis shared that the heart of every marriage is strong friendship. They shared three principles that lead to that.

Principle 1: Friends carry each others burdens.

Principle 2: Friends should always tell each-other the truth.

Principle 3: Friends don’t give up on each other.

 

Share a time when your spouse was a true friend to you with one of these principles. Not married? How has a friend helped you carry a burden, been honest, or encouraged you to persevere?

PRAYER TIME

Pray for everyone’s marriage in your group to be stronger in friendship. For singles groups, pray for friendships to be strengthened in the same 3 areas.

How did the message of value impact you? When you read these scriptures how does it make you feel when God calls you his child, royalty?

    PHIL 4:11-13 (NIV) - 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

     

 Give each person a chance to share for 1 min: 

Pastor Jerry said, “it’s not my situation that regulates my satisfaction.” He also shared the biblical secrets that shift us out of discontentment.  Let’s put some practical application to this spiritual activity! Answer these three questions:

 1. What is one fun thing I can do this week to be full of joy? 

2. What is one thing you can thank God for doing recently in your life?

3. Share how you are going to fix your thoughts on what is truth this week.

Philippians 4:6  (NLT) says to tell God what you need and thank Him for what He’s done. Share with your group and pray for one thing you need God’s help with this week.

    Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) - Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 

    1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (ESV) - Do you not know that in a race all the runners run. So run that you may obtain it (run to win). 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. 

    Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) - But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control

     

  3.  Give each person a chance to share for 1 min: Pastor Jerry told us how we can maximize the opportunity to win the race called life by activating self-control with the help from the ultimate coach, the Holy Spirit.  In the areas he mentioned (Money, Health, Social Media, Sex, Anger, Negative Speaking) where do you see the need to develop self control this week? Share with your group some practical incremental steps you can take towards “winning” this week.
